Detail -I choose subjects based on my observations in the places and spaces I travel through, constructing compositions from experiential reality. The painting "Listen" reveals a change that has altered the environment, bringing to mind the interconnectedness, trees, and beneath their roots weaving a narrative about a silver birch that grew around a rock, this tree bordered a forest that was decimated by development along the Muskoka River. Two figures emerge, one speaking, one turned bathed in sunlight from the rivers edge listening while underneath a third figure squirms upward symbolizing new life, regrowth encapsulating a positive continuance of nature's relationships..

Detail -These northern red oak trees saved me when I was lost and disoriented in the woods. The title connects to the female caryatids columns of the Acropolis. I connected with these old growth trees and their resemblance of the female form, the old ancient columns came to mind as a reflection of resilience and strength encompassing the interconnectedness of a moment in the forest. My images revolve around my experiential connections in nature, becoming humanized cultural narratives merging memories with the present.

Detail - A maple tree stands on a small piece of land that borders a marsh and river channel on the South Branch of the Muskoka River.This place is very special where there are no cottages, past the Rocky Narrows where you feel the river’s wildness. The tree marks the spot where the frogs sing, beavers build homes, otters and the moose swim. This growth of the limbs striving for light reflects perseverance and resilience of the trees and forest that live in the wetlands of the South Branch of the Muskoka River.

It is of particular importance to the flow of the river but developers now own the Rocky Narrows not understanding the fragility and environmental balance of the trees, rocks, creatures and water.

Detail - The painting reflects Wendy's connections with Isabel McLaughlin as an artist through life experiences and inspirations.......bringing the inside outside spiritually in a similar duality of our families histories, legacies that contributed to settling and building Canada. In this composition Wendy has incorporated the back view of Springvale/Webster Mansion 1797 with the Palm House Greenhouse. Wendy was inspired by a story from the people that keep Parkwood vibrant, when it snows the greenhouse is like a snow globe. At the end of October 2024 my great grandfather's house was designated an historical site, Webster Falls. Greenhouses were the way they lived off the land. Wendy imagines her grandfather running through the backdoor of Springvale just like the McLaughlin girls playing in the Greenhouses.

Wendy expresses her thoughts around Isabel McLaughlin's youngest sister Eleanor fondly called by family and friends "Billy". Constructing from history and stories Eleanor most certainly looked up to her older sister Isabel. Wendy imagines their relationship and imaginary play prompted by reading Dr Doolitte which was published in 1920. Eleanor would have been 12, Wendy read this book also at the age of 12.

Flora, 2025 Watercolour/Gouache on handmade 300lb rag paper. Flora is the Aphrodite/Venus of the greenhouses, Neoclassical marble sculpture of a girl at the cusp of being a woman. Throughout art history the image of the ideal representation of the female form has been painted in every period of art history. The Greek's being the first to represent the perfect super human elevating is to god like perfection. Wendy wanted to create a see through effect building this composition from plein aie study's outside the greenhouse, considering looking from the outside.

The texture and colour of the flower provied a glowing magenta warmth. Its cris crossing thorny vines interested Wendy creating a composition of of x marks the spot swirling in colours embracing Giovani's sculpture of the Three Graces. The image holds a sentiment to the McLaughlin family and there love of the Italian Garden.
